Love from Vicki
Beverly and I just returned from Portland last evening, Sunday... Sorry to have missed you all in Bend. Deborah and Don seemed very glad to see us when we arrived to the hospital last Wednesday. It was so good to see Deborah looking as well as she did post surgery. Bev and I shared a suite near downtown Portland not far from the hospital. I forgot how pretty Portland is. The sunsets had a spiritual quality looking out from Deborah's hospital room past the glowing cross that seemed to light her window as she rested. Our time felt very well spent, sharing, nurturing and encouraging Deborah. She graciously gave so much more back to us, even in her weakend state... Deborah's surgery was intense! She has a long incision down her center of her body. I can only imagine the pain she must have from this. We spent time each day, at the hospital trying to help Deborah get comfortable, cherishing the time no matter what was going on...Her wonderful husband Don rarely left her side! Together we took walks, gave her massages, did visualizations, listened to music, sang, shared stories, photos, laughter and a few tears. It was challenging and amazing to witness Deborah move through the gamut of emotions and physical pain. She bravely began to wean herself from the all the IV lines, and various drugs they were giving her post surgery. That was tough…but Deborah is one to process everything with tremendous courage, strength, honesty and vulnerability. Her system began to function again by Saturday afternoon so she could finally take in much needed sustenance by Saturday evening! This was a BIG accomplishment which we all celebrated! Then we were so thrilled to see Deborah ready to leave the hospital the very next morning as Beverly and I had to say goodbye and head for the airport and back to Santa Cruz. Deborah is now back home in Bend; near her loving family and friends who will be there, no doubt as she heals from her surgery and prepares to start her first round of chemo in a few weeks. Michael and I are taking our first "real vacation" in 2 1/2 years leaving on the 19Th of this month for ten days on Maui. It should be wonderful....especially knowing Deborah is successfully past a big hurdle in this journey. I imagine she will want to connect with you all in one way or another, and that you will want to show her your love and support. She is an inspiration and a love. I feel so honored to have had this time with my dearest friend, Deborah. Take care. And thanks to you all for your continued emotional and spiritual support to Deborah, Don and family and friends. Love and in spirit,Vicki
